Florida consumer group focuses on rising auto insurance rates

TALLAHASSEE — Florida’s insurance consumer advocate is forming a working group to focus on skyrocketing premiums for automobile coverage.

Robin Westcott on Thursday said one of the biggest reasons for those increases has been personal injury protection fraud.

State law requires motorists to purchase the no-fault coverage for personal injuries.

Westcott said she will invite those who have a stake in the personal injury protection system as well as lawmakers to join the group.

Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater appointed Westcott last month.

She said she hopes to submit the group’s findings to Atwater and the Legislature in November.
